Two weeks after I wrote about the different eras of -i names and the recent surge, the new name data showed even more of the same. Names ending in -i were up 6% for the year, and almost all of the top risers were new, "-i native" names rather than alternate spellings of -y names. Some typical examples:
Sekani
Yameli
Jai'air
Jardani
K'mari
Niani
Kayori
Malosi
Zaxai
Zaxai seems like a particularly good example of the "i is for impact" style. It was the name of a contestant on The Voice eliminated halfway through the competition, and was given to 14 boys (more than were named after Barack Obama last year).
