Can I keep international health insurance after changing residency?

I’m moving abroad permanently for the first time and I’m confused about one part of international health insurance. I understand that I can choose a plan based on where I’m going, but what happens if my legal residence changes later? For example, if I spend several years in one country and then move somewhere else, do I normally have to cancel the policy and apply again, or can an international plan simply be updated with the new country of residence? I’d rather understand this before choosing a long-term policy.
